Restricted Airspace

• New Haven sits beneath the outer fringe of the New York Class B airspace umbrella. The LGA and JFK Class B outer shelves extend over portions of southern New Haven County at higher altitudes. Commercial drone operations below 400 feet AGL are generally permissible under FAA Part 107, but operators should check the FAA B4UFLY app for specific shelf boundaries. LAANC authorization is available for the surrounding Class B and Class D areas.
• Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) is located within New Haven city limits on the East Shore and has Class D airspace with a 4 NM radius surface area. Portions of eastern and southern New Haven fall within the HVN Class D lateral boundaries. LAANC authorization is required for commercial drone flights within the HVN Class D area. HVN handles regional commercial flights, GA, and corporate aviation traffic. The airport is undergoing expansion with a new terminal and runway extension project.
• The Long Island Sound coastline along southern New Haven has moderate helicopter traffic including news, medevac, corporate, and sightseeing helicopters. New Haven Harbor and the Port of New Haven have commercial shipping, barge, and fuel tanker traffic. The harbor area includes the Gateway Terminal and the New Haven Terminal. Drone operators flying near the waterfront should maintain situational awareness of low-altitude helicopter and marine traffic. The Metro-North New Haven Line and Amtrak Northeast Corridor railroad tracks running through the city require maintaining safe lateral distance per FAA Part 107.39.
• Yale University campus and the adjacent Yale-New Haven Hospital complex are dense urban environments with heavy pedestrian traffic. FAA Part 107 prohibits flying directly over non-participants. The Yale Bowl and other university athletic facilities require coordination with Yale University security for commercial drone operations. The Yale Farm and West Campus areas in western New Haven may have additional restrictions due to research activities.
• Sleeping Giant State Park and West Rock Ridge State Park are adjacent to New Haven in Hamden and Woodbridge respectively. These Connecticut state parks require a special use permit from DEEP for commercial drone takeoff and landing. The trap rock ridges of West Rock and East Rock are notable geological features that generate thermal activity affecting drone stability. Operators should be aware of ridge turbulence when flying near these features.

Local Ordinances

New Haven is governed by Connecticut state drone law (Public Act 23-76, 2023) and FAA Part 107 regulations. The City of New Haven does not have a specific municipal drone ordinance as of 2026, but commercial drone takeoff and landing on city-owned property requires authorization from the New Haven Department of Parks, Recreation, and Trees. City parks including East Rock Park, Edgewood Park, Lighthouse Point Park, and East Shore Park require explicit permission for commercial drone operations. New Haven Harbor and the Port of New Haven require coordination with the New Haven Port Authority for commercial data collection work. Connecticut state parks near New Haven (including Sleeping Giant State Park and West Rock Ridge State Park) require a special use permit from DEEP. Yale University campus requires coordination with Yale Security for any commercial drone operations on or over university property.
